**CLINTON’S DEFENSE SPIN DEFIES RULE OF LAW
Week #2 of the Clinton impeachment trial is coming to a close. The
three days
of spin by Clinton’s defense lawyers were predictable: attack the House
impeachment managers and proclaim Clinton as a partisan victim. No new
factual
evidence was presented to try to exonerate the President on perjury and
obstruction of justice charges, nor was anything new revealed after one
day of
question and answers to both sides. This Monday will signal the
beginning of
showdown as the Senate considers motions on dismissal, witnesses and the
possible introduction of new evidence.
**WOMAN IN KENNEDY OFFICE WANTS CLINTON OUT
As the Clinton Investigative Commission (CIC) was finishing its delivery
of
100,000 new petitions to the Senate last Tuesday, Jack Clayton was
happily
surprised to meet an elderly woman visitor in the office of Sen. Ted
Kennedy
(D-MA) who inquired about their petitions. After being told that these
petitions call for Clinton’s conviction and removal from office, she
asked to
sign one (which CIC promptly obliged) and then she handed it to the
receptionist who looked in awe. Don’t concede any territory, even in
Ted’s
office.
**BARR GETS STANDING OVATION FROM CROWD IN D.C.
CIC’s Steve Miroy reports “Congressman Bob Barr (R-Georgia) made a
surprise
appearance to the Conservative Political Action Conference Friday
dinner. The
most enthusiastic and sustained applause from the 1,000 participants
followed,
fanned by CIC leaders in front. Few seemed to ignite the crowd as much.”
**DON’T LET RUSH, PAT AND RALPH SLOW YOU DOWN.
Recent statements, taken out of context, by Rush Limbaugh, Pat Robertson
and
Ralph Reed are being quoted by the news media that “we have lost” the
impeachment battle. These commentators are playing to mass audiences.
Don’t
allow “staged” confusion, spread by the news media, get to you. Ralph
embraced
“censure” just before the House voted 2 of 4 articles through. Rush
says
“nobody cares” while millions are signing petitions. He is building
controversy. Pat will be on Sunday Talk Shows. Not bad, for him. Or
us.
CIC’s
Jack Clayton says “we must fight all the way. No rational conservative
leader
will make concessions ahead of the vote.” Anyone who listens to Pat,
Rush or
Ralph know they are frequently quoted out of context or make mistakes.
We all
benefit from their getting wider “play” in the news media --even if it
is
“staged”. Don’t let up. This is one time that events will show
conviction of
President Clinton hinged on the efforts of key grass-roots efforts like
CIC.
(CIC concedes our share of cheap staged events, too.)
The Senate must answer only one question, “Did Clinton Do It?”. We all
know he
did. So do they.
A vote to remove Clinton is the only recourse. And this will not change
just
because there are a minority of
Senators who seek to pull a curtain over the mid-section of Clinton’s
exposed
activities.
At the 1989 Senate impeachment trial of Judge Walter Nixon, 26 currently
sitting Democratic Senators voted for conviction on the impeachable
crime of
“perjury before a grand jury”--- the same charge in the first article of
impeachment against President Clinton. Clearly, hypocrisy will take on
a new
meaning should these Democrats fail to fulfill their constitutional
duties.
Senior Sen. Robert Byrd (D-WV), mistakenly touted as some sort of
“constitutionalist,” will be introducing a motion for dismissal of the
trial
this Monday. This will be the one day he won’t be carrying a copy of
the
constitution on him --- something he’s arrogantly bragged about for
decades.
CIC’s Scott Lauf feels that eleven of the 27 have announced they will
ignore
all facts about Clinton’s crimes. The eleven are Byrd, John Kerry, Tom
Harkin,
Carl Levin, Daniel Inouye, Ted Kennedy, Tom Daschle, Chris Dodd, Barbara
Mikulski, Daniel P. Moynihan and Paul Sarbanes.
That leaves 16. Let your voices be heard! Please call the following 16
Senators and remind them that perjury is indeed a “high crime and
misdemeanor”;
that they voted on this same offense in the case of Judge Nixon in 1989;
and
they should vote the same way on Bill Clinton. CIC strongly urges that
phone
calls be made before e-mailing (NOTE: E-mails to the Senate are
sometimes
filtered or returned to sender).

CIC NAMES OTHER SENATORS ON THE ROPES
CIC polling shows 50 of 55 Republicans will vote for witnesses. Call all
Republicans and urge them to stand firm. These are “new” or more junior
Democratic Senators who did not vote on the 1989 Nixon Removal. CIC
feels
these
8 Democratic Senators will vote to end the trial: Daniel Akaka - Hi.,
Barbara
Boxer - Cal., Dianne Feinstein - Cal., Mary Landrieu - La. Patty Murray
- Wa.,
Charles Schumer - N.Y., Bob Torricelli - N.J. and Paul Wellstone - Mn.
CIC polling indicates that these 9 “junior” Democrats might vote for
witnesses
and might vote for conviction: Evan Bayh - In. , Max Cleland - Ga.
Byron
Dorgan - N.D., Dick Durbin - Ill., John Edwards - N.C. , Russ Feingold -
Wis.,
Tim Johnson - S.D. , Jack Reed - R.I., Ron Wyden - Or.. Conviction is
possible
because witnesses are unpredictable and impossible to control.
