*HOUSE IMPEACHMENT MANAGERS PRESENT COMPELLING CASE

The House impeachment team has concluded their presentation for Clinton’s conviction and removal from office. Though press pundits have criticized the last three days as unexciting and boring, these opening proceedings were filled with persuasive arguments and strong factual evidence of perjury and obstruction of justice. (For a full account of the trial to date, please visit CIC’s “News on Capitol Hill” headline at http://www.impeachclinton.org/news.php).

*CIC MEMBERS ATTEND TRIAL’S FIRST DAY

A pro-impeachment crowd CIC members attended the beginning proceedings of the historic impeachment trial of Clinton and sat in both the public and “special” sections of the Senate gallery. CIC Executive Officer Scott Lauf had was present opening arguments. He was impressed with these initial speeches and the composure of the Republican side of the jury, many of whom were attentive and taking notes. But if body language, albiet trivial, is any indication of serious interest and impartiality, it did not exist on the Democratic side. Ted Kennedy could be seen picking his ear several times, and Patrick Leahy and Paul Wellstone got up and left their chairs periodically. Charles Schumer, probably the most partisan of all the Democrats, was slouching with his legs crossed and the side of his face buried in one hand. At one point he exchanged notes with Barbara Boxer who snickered and was sitting directly behind him. It will be interesting to observe their behavior this week when the White House lawyers present their side.

CIC encourages supporters to come to Washington and witness history in the making. 1) Visit your two Senators’ offices and inquire about obtaining passes to the Senate gallery. Each office has 3 full-day passes per day which can be given to constituents. The procedures are different for each office --- some offices have long waiting lists, and others have allowed full-day passes to be used for one or two-hour periods to give more access to constituents. 2) Another way to enter the gallery is through the public lines. There are 50 seats in the gallery reserved for the public and one can obtain a pass for this by standing in line outside of the east entrance of the U.S. Capitol Building. The wait can be 2 hours long, and once inside the you are only allowed in the gallery for 15 minutes until another group of people are rotated through. (For further information or questions, call your Senators or the Senate Sergeant-at-Arms at (202) 224-2341, or e-mail lauf@impeachclinton.org. ) If you planned a Washington visit for anytime, this would be the best time. Your visit will make a difference.

*CIC TO DELIVER 100,000 NEW PETITIONS!

Jack Clayton, spokesman for the Clinton Investigative Commission (CIC) will deliver up to 100,000 new petitions (collected from the web site and direct mail) supporting the conviction and removal from office of President Clinton. Mr. Clayton will begin at Sen. Bob Kerrey’s office at 11 am on Tuesday, January 19th and will present paper petitions and diskettes. They will also present special doctor’s “permission slips” encouraging the Senators to take a sick-out and not attend Mr. Clinton’s State of the Union address. Please consider calling Senator's offices to tell them "My friend Jack Clayton is delivering my written petition for conviction today." And we urge all supporters to help keep the petition drive going by encouraging friends, family and colleagues to sign up at http://www.impeachclinton.org/resources.php?article=petition if they have not done so already.

*KEEP THE HEAT ON THE SENATE...

CIC's Steve Miroy urges you to continue contacting Senators with twice daily phone calls, and regular letters, faxes and e-mails stating strong support for conviction and removal. Miroy, who has tackled dozens of Senators, recommends that phone calls be made before sending e-mails. Daily calls are the best," Steve says. Some Senate offices are not as responsive to e-mails; others, in fact, get full mail boxes or they shut down their systems. For the latest contact information on selected Senators (including e-mail addresses for the new members), please go to http://www.impeachclinton.org/resources.php?article=contact
